The Bush administration finally responded today to the Supreme Court ruling on global warming — the case the Bush administration lost nearly a year ago.
Unfortunately, the response is a blatant stall tactic cooked up by reactionary groups like the Heritage Foundation.
The administration plan was announced in letters today to congressional leaders. EPA chief Stephen Johnson, ever loyal to the White House, announced that EPA would undertake an “advanced notice of public rulemaking” on this issue. Put simply, it means the Bush team has punted the issue to the next administration.
Consider, for example, that EPA issued a similar notice in 2004 regarding pollution standards for diesel trains and ships. It took nearly four years for the agency to come out with actual standards, and that issue was relatively simple compared to this one.
This latest stall tactic underscores the need for Congress to get moving on the issue.
