“Skap-bee-deep-bop-doo-beeeeee!”
This performance from last year’s Pickathon festival, by Dom Flemons of Carolina Chocolate Drops fame, starts out with forceful scatting. Then, the trio launches into three minutes of catchy acoustic acrobatics. “’Til the Seas Run Dry” is a playful take on old-timey folk music that’ll have you bouncing in your chair, tapping your fingers on the table, or humming as you walk down the street — and, per the percussionist’s solo at 2:23, it might make you rethink your vocation and consider a career drumming on the side of a string bass with brushes.
Like what you hear? Consider buying tickets for the August 2016 Pickathon festival, which features the likes of Jeff Tweedy (of Wilco), Beach House, Yo La Tengo, and many others.
In the meantime, tune in to Grist each month for more exclusive, intimate performances from last year’s festival as part of our On The Farm series. We’ll be collecting plaid shirts and practicing our scatting, preparing our bodies (and ears) for this summer’s festival.
