What do you get when you cross a steel guitar and a Weber barbecue grill? One very unique musical instrument — and precisely what we’d expect from Giant³ Sand, an innovative alt-rock band from Tucson, Ariz.

This performance of “Tumble and Tear,” from last year’s Pickathon music festival, is like an extremely classy jam straight out of your neighbor’s garage, complete with handcrafted wonders like a wheelbarrow-turned-upright-bass.

Like what you hear? Consider grabbing some tickets for Portland’s Pickathon festival this August, featuring the likes of Jeff Tweedy (of Wilco), Beach House, Yo La Tengo, and others. In the meantime, tune in to Grist each month for more exclusive, intimate performances from last year’s festival as part of our On The Farm series. We’ll be busy turning our spare gardening tools into instruments in preparation for this summer’s event.
