In the U.S., June heat broke 2,284 daily maximum temperature records and tied a further 998, according to the National Climatic Data Center. Here’s what that looked like for the lower 48 states: basically, a horrible case of heat rash.
For completeness’ sake, here’s the chart with Alaska and Hawaii included. The non-contiguous states were a lot less overheated, but there were three heat records broken in Hawaii, and 14 broken and 10 tied in Alaska.
This year we’ve seen 23,383 record high temperatures, compared to 13,582 at this time last year. But, you know, I’m sure that’s just “summer.”
