Nonprofit environmental news organization will maintain the archives of the influential social- and environmental-justice publication that closed in 2019
Seattle, Washington (June 2, 2020) – Grist, the nation’s leading environmental media organization, announced today that it has acquired the digital archives and brand assets of Pacific Standard, the online magazine covering social and environmental justice that closed in August 2019.
Pacific Standard combined rigorous reporting and narrative journalism with peer-reviewed research to cover social and environmental justice. Grist, the award-winning online publication that focuses on climate solutions has grown significantly over the past few years, and shares Pacific Standard’s commitment to environmental justice.
Pacific Standard was transferred to Grist by its publisher, The Social Justice Foundation, because of the desire for the content to continue to be available online through the stewardship of a mission-aligned news organization.
“We’re honored to steward Pacific Standard’s impressive archives and brand into the future,” Grist CEO Brady Walkinshaw says. “Our goal is to make sure the award-winning and critical reporting on environmental and social justice issues that Pacific Standard produced continues to live on.”
With the acquisition, Grist will keep Pacific Standard’s content housed at its original URL, psmag.com, and will take ownership of the domain.
“Preserving the stories in the archives of Pacific Standard and finding a way for the brand to live on was imperative for the Foundation after we had to make the hard decision to close the magazine,” the Social Justice Foundation Board said. “It was serendipitous when Grist approached us, as we’ve always admired the nonprofit news organization and couldn’t have asked for a better home for this beloved brand and all of the thoughtful reporting done during the lifetime of the news organization.”
To access the award-winning journalism from Pacific Standard, you can visit psmag.com. Grist will announce additional plans for the social and environmental justice brand in the coming months. Of course, it continues publishing its nationally recognized content at grist.org.
