The Bloomberg administration wants to allow more office towers to be built around Grand Central Station. Whether or not this is a good plan, it’s dredged up some freaky/fabulous ideas from architects to deal with the craziness of the train station, the Wall Street Journal reports:
A pedestrian halo suspended in the sky between two office towers. An elevated glass walkway with seasonal grasses. A pedestrian plaza with sidewalk cafes and retail.
A pedestrian halo in the sky. It’s a little bit dreamy. It also seems mostly useless — are train commuters going to take the elevator up to the 1 millionth story of the building, walk around the walkway, and then take the elevator back down in order to get across the station? Well, considering how much of a pain in the ass it can be to traverse Grand Central, maybe, yeah.
