Obama responds to the trumped-up “lipstick on a pig” controversy, whereby the media dutifully reported the McCain campaign’s hilarious assertion that Obama was calling Palin a pig:

Yes, the McCain campaign would love to have this kind of thing continue right through November. Obama thinks the American people would rather discuss solutions to the energy crisis and other such matters of governance and policy.

But why does he think that? If the American people want to discuss the energy crisis, why does fake BS gossip and slander get the ratings? Why is it so popular? Why do McCain’s demonstrably false claims about oil drilling not hurt him?

Some American voters want to discuss energy policy in a serious way. But not enough.
