Researchers discovered this new species of monkey in a remote area of the Congo, where it was able to escape detection for so long through a combination of profound wisdom and being able to see through time.
The new monkey — the first new primate species to be discovered in Africa in 28 years — is called the lesula, and it’s actually not uncommon in the area where it lives. (It just took a long time for scientists to stumble across it because it lives in a basically unexplored jungle.) But that doesn’t mean the species isn’t vulnerable, because all monkeys in Africa are threatened by illegal hunting. Most are sold as bushmeat, but the lesula in particular is a prized source of Steve Buscemeyes.
